The solution is for a marine research company specialising in management, programme development and reporting services. The company’s work stretches across Asia Pacific, North America, and Europe and also encompasses marine environmental services to benefit governments, industries and communities. The customer is dependent on controlled, certified, all-in-one computing platforms to optimise the performance of its fishing vessel monitoring solution.

  • The Challenges:

    • A compact, all-in-one, small form factor computer to save space onboard fishing vessels
    • The customer required a passively cooled solution with a fanless architecture
    • The overall solution needed to be capable of supporting the customer’s specific I/O requirements
    • Platform must be able to run peripheral devices and the processor board, even when power fails
    • All fishing data should be removable for on land analysis using the customer’s specific software
    • Certification to EN60945, encompassing EMC, thermal and vibration performance

    The Solution

    • Captec designed a platform with a custom chassis to meet depth and height requirements
    • Fanless CPU with a custom heat sink to passively cool the device and reduce noise emissions
    • Design of a custom I/O board to support functionalities including GPS, video cameras and multiple equipment sensors
    • Computers specified with an UltraCapacity UPS to run output and processor boards in the event of system failure
    • Integrated removable drive bay with 500GB hard drive disk for the reliable storage and transportation of fishing data
    • Captec tested platforms in-house and managed the outsourcing of compliance testing at an independent facility
