Captec apprentices deliver new viewing platform for Fleet Pond Nature Reserve
Captec apprentices, Ed and Amber, have successfully delivered a new viewing platform at the Fleet Pond Nature Reserve.
The project began earlier in the year, with fabrication work starting in February at Captec’s facility. Ed and Amber worked on the build at the factory before moving to the site to complete the final installation over two days.
Led by Phill Gower, Technical Lead at Captec Subsystems Engineering, the project saw the apprentices take full ownership from start to finish. Ed and Amber were responsible for fabrication, folding, welding, installation, and the preparation of all RAMS documentation, demonstrating both technical skill and professional discipline throughout.
The platform was funded through the Farnborough Airport environmental grant, secured by the local charity, Fleet Pond Society, behind the reserve. The charity has expressed how pleased they are with the final result, which provides visitors with a safe and accessible space to enjoy the surrounding landscape.
“This was an interesting and fun project. We carried out a site survey and risk assessment and devised a method statement. I can see how this planning meant that installing each frame went well every time as everyone worked as a team,” said Ed.
“This was a great project that taught us many new skills. It was good to be involved in every stage from folding and welding through to the installation. The customer was very pleased and I feel proud of what we have achieved,” Amber added.

As recognition of their contribution, Ed and Amber were presented with Certificates of Appreciation by the Chairman of Fleet Pond Society.
